I asked my girlfriend to marry me

I was pretty confused about my feelings when I rang Kids Helpline. I'd asked my girlfriend if she would marry me, but she said she wanted some space. That freaked me out because I was worried if I agreed, she would meet someone else and that would be it for us. I didn't want to lose her. Mum and dad weren't very supportive of me either and I felt like they'd turned against me.
It was all too much to cope with so I started drinking to stay calm. The Kids Helpline counsellor suggested I look at my feelings and how I was dealing with them. We also talked about my drinking as a way to try to cope. I saw that it wasn't fixing anything and I needed to find another way to work things out.
The counsellor helped me to see that everyone's needs are different. The talks with her helped me to be able to show my feelings in an okay way with both my girlfriend and my parents.
