Grief & Loss

Things that may help you when you are grieving

Feeling

Remember, it's OK to feel sad, angry, upset and hurt, and you might feel like this for some time. These feelings can come and go at any time. You need to remember that feeling happy and laughing are still OK too.

Crying

Crying can help you to let go of all of those feelings inside. It's OK to find a quiet or special place to go to if you don't want anyone to see you cry.

Saying goodbye

Saying goodbye to someone you have loved can be helpful. Ways to say goodbye include writing a letter or email, or going to a funeral. Some people also like to write poems or songs to say goodbye.

Taking time to remember

While some people might find it helpful to say goodbye - others may like to find a way to remember the person or thing they have lost. Maybe a combination of saying goodbye and remembering will feel best for you. Remember, there is no right or wrong way.

If you would like to keep the memory and a sense of your lost person or pet with you, would it help to talk about them with someone? Who might be an understanding person to talk to? Remember, you can always call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Do something you like doing

Doing something you like, such as hanging out with friends, watching a DVD, listening to music or playing a sport, can help you to feel better for a while. It's OK to laugh and have fun even while you are grieving.

Talk to someone

Talking to someone you trust about how you are feeling and what you are going through can be helpful. You can talk to a family member, friend, school teacher, or counsellor, which may help you feel less lonely.

Talking also helps everyone understand how each other are feeling. But remember, it's OK if you are not ready to talk.

You may find that a grown up is worried about you and wants you to get help, or you may feel you need someone to talk to. If you are grieving and want to talk, call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800. If you can't get to a phone, try our email or web counselling services.
