Family Relationships

What if my family isn't a very happy one?

For a whole heap of reasons, not all families are happy. Sometimes parents have problems that make it difficult for them to be the kind of parents their children need them to be. Sometimes, there are problems between mum and dad or carers that cause lots of fights and being at home isn't very happy for anyone. Sometimes, there are money or health problems in a family that cause everyone to worry about what will happen next. Whatever the reason, being in a family that isn't happy or supportive can be really hard.

Kids growing up in a family that isn't very happy sometimes feel:

  • Worried and scared, especially about what the future holds
  • Embarrassed or ashamed about what is happening in their family
  • Confused and mixed up - perhaps loving their family, but also hating what is happening
  • Anxious that no one finds out what is going on
  • Sad and lonely

One thing is for sure though, if no one knows what is going on, it's hard for anyone to help or for things to change. If stuff was going on in your family that wasn't okay or was worrying you and making you feel unhappy who would be a safe and understanding person to talk to? Maybe Kids Helpline would be a good place to start!
