Being Scared
Paying attention to your body
The signs of being scared are there for a reason and it's important to take notice of them. Sometimes being scared is our body's way of warning us about danger. By trusting that these signs are there to be listened to, we can help keep safe, for example, you might:
- get a bad feeling when you meet someone new
- feel scared about something that your friend has dared you to do
Whatever it is, feeling scared is one of the ways that your body can talk to you. Do you listen when your body talks to you in this way?
Common things kids are scared of
The things that scare kids often change with age. Really little kids can be afraid of loud noises, being left alone or monsters - stuff like that. As kids get bigger they tend to get scared of different things, such as standing up and talking in front of the class, being bullied, or things they have seen on the news.
Not everyone is scared of the same things and often people grow out of the things that scare them. Here are some of the things that kids have told us that they are scared of or have been scared of in the past:
- scary movies and tv shows
- nightmares and scary dreams
- thunderstorms
- being in the dark
- things they hear on the news
- sounds in the night
- sleeping away from home
- spiders
